Working with Excel

Document Window

It provides such parts that are used for organizing, manipulating and viewing data, graphs etc.
 
Workbook
A workbook is the collection of worksheets. It enables to create and organize related data on different sheets under a single file. It can be helpful for reducing the need of maintaining different files.
 
Worksheet
A worksheet is a working sheet having grid of rows and columns. There can be as many as 255 sheets, named as Sheet1, Sheet2, .... and so on depending on the capabilities and memory of the computer system.
 
Sheet Tabs
These are located next to the horizontal scrollbar that can be used to select the desired sheet, move or copy the desired sheet within a workbook or other workbooks as required.
 
Tab Scrolling Buttons
These are the sets of four boxes that can be used to scroll the sheet across left to right or vice versa.
 
Column
There are 256 columns numbered using letters A through IV on the top border of the worksheet.
 
Row
There are 65536 rows numbered using numbers 1 through 65536 on the left border of the worksheet.
 
Cell
A rectangular area formed by intersection of row and column is called as a cell. There are 16777216 cells in a worksheet.
 
Cell Address
A cell is referred to by the column number followed by the row number such as A1, D3, IV6891, etc.
 
Cell Pointer
A rectangular highlighted area that appears on one cell in the worksheet is called the cell pointer. It is used to select a cell.
 
Active Cell or Current Cell
The selected cell in which data is entered when you begin typing is known as Active cell. Only one cell is active at a time. The active cell is bounded by a heavy border.
 
The cell on which the cell pointer is positioned is called current cell.
 
Scroll Bar
Workbook window contains two scroll bars: horizontal and vertical that can be used to scroll the sheet horizontally and vertically respectively.
